Finished size of the luggage ID tag is 3.67" X 6.83"

     

Use a minimum 5"x7" hoop.

Supplies:

Embroidery thread:

You will only need one thread color to compliment the fabric you have chosen. The different color stops in the design are for the purpose of bringing the machine to a stop. Please follow the numbered instructions for each color stop.

Wind 1/2 bobbin with matching embroidery thread color

Fabric:

2 each -- 5" x 7" fabric for top inset piece
1 each -- 5"x7" medium weight stabilizer

2 each -- 6"x9" fabric for the bottom piece
1 each -- 6"x9" piece of medium weight stabilizer

1 each -- 2"x12" piece for strap or use 12" of 5/8" ribbon

1 each -- Heavy-weight vinyl 4"x2-3/4"

1 piece of card stock paper cut to 4"x2-3/4"

Badgemaster® heavy-weight stabilizer or similar product

Steam-a-Seam® 1/2" double-sided tape or similar product

Masking tape
 

PREPARE FABRIC
Cut fabric and stabilizer to the correct sizes.

2 each -- 5" x 7" fabric for top inset piece
1 each -- 5"x7" medium weight stabilizer

2 each -- 6"x9" fabric for the bottom piece
1 each -- 6"x9" piece of medium weight stabilizer

1 each -- 2"x12" piece for strap or use 12" of 5/8" ribbon
Spray the wrong side of all pieces of fabric and both sides of the medium weight stabilizer with spray adhesive.
Hint: To spray fabric pieces with embroidery spray adhesive without having to worry about the spray ending up on other items, hold the fabric piece inside a trash basket lined with plastic liner while you spray.
Make a fabric sandwich with the stabilizer in the middle and the fabric pieces, wrong sides together, on the outside. Both back and front should have the right side of fabric showing. Smooth with hands or press if needed..

Shown is prepared pieces and vinyl which will be used later.
PREPARE THE STRAP. If you are going to use 5/8" ribbon skip this part.
Strap fabric should measure 2"x12".

Press down 5/8" on the top long edge.

Fold up the raw edge of the fabric extending on the bottom so the top raw edge and bottom raw edge are aligned. Press well.

Lay a strip of the Steam-a-Seam® or similar product along the bottom, small fold.
Turn the bottom, small piece up where the two raw edges meet. The Steam-a-Seam® will fold back up on itself.
Press according to the Steam-a-Seam® directions.

You can use more of the Steam-a-Seam® product to fuse the strap while making the strap, if desired. It is a matter of preference.

 
Finished strap.

To use ribbon instead of the fabric strap, cut 12" of 5/8" wide ribbon.
EMBROIDER THE TAG

Wind 1/2 bobbin of thread you have chosen to compliment your fabric.

Place bobbin in machine.
Hoop a minimum 5"x7" hoop with clear, water-soluble stabilizer. I used Badgemaster Heavy-weight.

Load Luggage Square Design into your embroidery machine and place prepared bobbin into your machine.
1. Embroider the strap placement line.

Fold the strap in half with the seam inside and matching the raw ends.
Place the strap so the raw ends extend about 1/2" below the placement line.

Use a piece of masking tape below the placement line to hold the bottom in place while stitching the trim line.
2. Embroider the trim line.

Remove the tape and trim close to the stitching line.
3.  Embroider the zigzag tack down stitching.
4. Embroider the placement line for the top insert piece.
Position the 5"x7" prepared fabric piece to cover the placement line.

Tape the corners down with masking tape.
5. Embroider the top insert trim line.

Remove the hoop from the machine.
Use sharp, curved embroider scissors to trim next to the stitching lines.

Be careful cutting away the center fabric not to cut the stabilizer.

Use the point of the scissors to start the cut, then press the lower blade against the stitching.

Gently, but firmly, lift the fabric as you trim.
Trim around the outside trim line.

Return the hoop to the machine.
6.  Embroider the top and center inset satin cover stitching.
7. Embroider the button hole.

This is optional. If you do not want to have a button on the tag, skip this step. Manually move your machine's stitching sequence to the next color.
8. Embroider the placement line for the back fabric piece.

Remove the hoop from the machine.
Turn the hoop over to the back side.

Place the prepared back fabric piece so it completely covers the placement line.

Tape the corners down with masking tape. Be sure to smooth the tape well so it doesn't stick while stitching the trim line.

 
9.  Embroider the back piece trim line.

Remove the hoop from the machine.
Turn the hoop to the back side and trim around the trim line.
Turn the hoop to the right side and trim under the stitching line running across the strap to remove any remaining fabric nubs.
Return the hoop to the machine.

10.  Embroider the satin cover stitching around the tag.

Embroidery is finished.
Remove the hoop from the machine.

Tear away the stabilizer from around the outer edge of the tag.

Tear away the stabilizer from the center hole and the area between the top of the tag and the top of the inset piece.

Cut the slit in the buttonhole.
Lift up the buttonhole edge and, finding the middle of the buttonhole, mark a spot so you know exactly where to position the button to be attached.
Attach the button you have chosen, starting the knot from the top side of the tag and catching only the top fabric and stabilizer.

Use the template described below for adding name, address or whatever information you want to include on the tag.
A template for the cardboard stock and vinyl is included in a text file which can be printed from Microsoft Word.

If you open the file in Microsoft Word, you can insert text using the font of your choice, and then print on the cardboard stock prior to cutting to size. Or you may simply cut the card out and write or print your information for the tag.

Cut vinyl and cardboard stock pieces to 4"x2-3/4" and slip inside the center inset piece.
