POCKET PIZAZZ CRISS CROSS HOW TO Decorative detail embroidery Topstitching color for
topstitching and attaching the pocket to your item or fabric.
|

| PREPARE POCKET | |||

Fold the 10" length of the 19-5/8"x10" piece of main color fabric in half, matching the two raw edges and press the fold so the fabric is well creased. Press the 10" length of the 10"x6-1/2" piece of contrast fabric in half, matching the two raw edges and press the fold so the fabric is well creased. |
||
![]() |
Place the main flap fabric with the fold at the bottom. Place the template on the left side, aligning the side and top. |
||
![]() |
Fold the left side in, using the template as a guide, to
form the left flap.
I placed the template to show at the top so you could see the placement. Press the fold to crease the fabric well. |
||
![]() |
Fold the right side over to lay over the left flap. The raw
edge should line up with the left fold as shown. Press well. |
||
![]() |
Open up the center contrast fabric. Spray the inside with embroidery spray adhesive. Spray both sides of the stabilizer. |
||
| Hint: To spray fabric pieces with embroidery spray adhesive without having to worry about the spray ending up on other items, hold the fabric piece inside a trash basket lined with plastic liner while you spray. | |||
![]() |
Place the stabilizer on the fabric, aligning the edges, the center crease and one end.
![]() |
Turn center piece to the right side. Place in the center area of the main color fabric about 1/2" above the bottom fold. The sides will fit exactly between the crease lines so align the sides to the creases exactly.
|
||
![]() |
Turn the piece to the back side and smooth the center piece down on the back center section as shown.
![]() |
Turn the piece back to the front side.
Your pocket piece should now look as shown. |
||
![]() |
Fold the flaps in, right over left, and press well.
![]() |
Begin with the flap on your left. Turn the top edge under to form a diagonal fold beginning at the top left corner and ending at the bottom right corner as shown. Press fold to crease well. Excess fabric will extend below the bottom edge. |

Repeat diagonal fold and trim for the right flap. |

I used some Fray Block on just the tip of the right flap corner to ensure there is no raveling. This is optional. |
|||
|
MAKE THE POCKET Load the 3 Criss Cross design into your machine. Hoop a 6”x9” hoop with Badgemaster or similar clear wash-away stabilizer. Thread the machine with the thread color you plan to use for the satin cover stitching along the top of the center contrast piece. Use a thread color to compliment and/or contrast with the fabrics used. |

1. Embroider the pocket placement line.
![]() |
Fold in the flaps. Place the prepared pocket piece with the bottom and folded side edges matching the placement line. |
||
![]() |
Open out the flaps, but hold in place with your hand. Tape the bottom in place with masking tape. This is a good place to double check your pocket placement before continuing. Fold in the flaps and make sure pocket is where it should be and then fold the flaps back out. |
||

2. Using the same color thread, embroider the center contrast piece trim line.
|
||

Remove the hoop from the machine. Trim away both layers of fabric and stabilizer above the trim line using sharp, curved scissors to get as close to the stitching as possible, but being careful not to cut into the wash-away stabilizer in the hoop. Return the hoop to the machine. |

3. Using the same color thread, embroider the satin cover stitching for the top of the center contrast piece. |
||
![]() |
4. Change the thread color to what you have chosen for the decorative trim on the center piece. Embroider the decorative trim. |
||
![]() |
Remove the tape carefully from the bottom edge, but don't throw it away. Just set it aside for a moment.
![]() |
Fold the flap closest to the bottom of the hoop in. Align the bottom edges exactly.
![]() |
Use the same piece of tape you set aside and tape the bottom in place again.
The tack down line will sew next to the fold so leave enough room with the tape so the stitching line will not sew over the tape. |
||

5. Change the thread color to what you have chosen for the topstitching. Embroider the left flap topstitching line. Remove the tape and set aside. |

Fold the other flap in, matching bottom edges and making
sure the point comes all the way to the edge as shown. |
|||

6. Embroider the tack down stitching. Remove the tape. 7. Embroider the bottom basting line. |
||
![]() |
Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over to the back side. Use the scissors points next to the tack down stitching to make a tear in the stabilizer. Then tear off the stabilizer, beginning at the tear. |
