See the General Instructions for Inset Fabric Preparation.

MAKE THE POCKET

Load the 1 Butterfly design into your machine.

Hoop a 6”x9” hoop with Badgemaster or similar clear wash-away stabilizer.

Thread the machine with the thread color you plan to use for the detail veins in the butterfly’s wings. Use a thread color to compliment and/or contrast with the butterfly fabric.

1.  Embroider the pocket placement line.

Place the prepared pocket piece with the fold at the top and the pressed under edges at the bottom. The side and bottom edges should be matching the placement line exactly. What you see is slightly off so you can see the placement line.

Note: The template is only shown to emphasize the top should be on your left. You do not need the template any further in this design.

Tape the bottom in place with masking tape or spray the back of the pocket with embroidery spray adhesive before placing, or do both.

2. Using the same color thread, embroider the pocket trim line.

Trim away fabric above the trim line using sharp, curved scissors to get as close to the stitching as possible, but being careful not to cut into the wash-away stabilizer in the hoop. Remove the hoop, if necessary, trim and

3.  Using the same color thread, embroider the butterfly fabric placement line.

Spray the back of the prepared butterfly fabric with spray adhesive and place it so the placement line is completely covered.

4.  Using the same color thread, embroider butterfly fabric trim line.

Remove the hoop, if necessary, and trim away fabric around the trim line using sharp, curved scissors to get right next to the stitching. Be careful not to cut pocket fabric or stabilizer underneath.
Shown is trimmed fabric.  Return the hoop to the machine.

5.  Using the same color thread, embroider vein detail in wings. This thread color should have been used for the previous steps up to this point.

6.  Change thread color, if desired. Embroider the butterfly satin cover stitch – this thread color can be the same color as the vein detail or a different color to contrast and compliment the colors of the fabrics and thread used.

  1. Change thread color, if desired. Embroider the butterfly body. This thread color can be the same color as the vein detail or a different color to contrast and compliment the colors of the fabrics and thread used.

Remove the tape from the bottom of the pocket.

Here you can see the placement line under the finished pocket.

Lift the pocket out of the hoop, tearing away the clear stabilizer.

Wash the stabilizer from the butterfly under a faucet. Lay flat to dry. You can pick the stabilizer from the back of the butterfly, but it is easier to simply wash it away.

Press, if needed.

Pocket is ready to attach.

To attach your pocket, you can simply pin it in place and stitch around the edges. I like to use Steam-a-Seam, once again, to secure the pocket before stitching, especially as I like to use decorative stitching around pockets to make them stand out; however, this is optional. Instructions for attaching with Steam-a-Seam are below.

Turn the pocket to the back side. Apply Steam-a-Seam tape to sides and bottom.

Turn pocket to the right side and position it as desired on your project.

Finger-press in place around edges.

Press around the edges to activate the Steam-a-Seam, following the directions on the package. Your pocket is securely in place, ready for stitching.

This is a great time to play with the decorative stitches on your machine. Experiment first with scraps of fabric to get the exact look you want. Use tear-away stabilizer underneath for a nice finish. I used a decorative stitch around the edges and then a triple stitch inside of that to finish my pocket.
