POCKET PIZAZZ SWIRL HOW TO

If you have not printed General Instructions, please print before you begin this pocket.

Finished size of pocket: 5.14” high x 5.65” wide. Design is rotated in hoop. Use a minimum 6"x9" hoop.

Supplies:

Template - Make from Template design or cut to size and label. See General Instructions.

Embroidery thread colors for the following:

Decorative center leaf and vine detail

Decorative center flower detail

Swirl satin cover stitch

Topstitching color for attaching the pocket to your item or fabric

Fabric:

Pocket fabric: 1 each --10-1/2" high x 8" wide fabric for the pocket. If you are using a fabric with a definite pattern, the 8" side of the fabric will be the top of your piece so keep that in mind when cutting.
 

Swirl fabric: 2 each 7”x 5½” pieces

Swirl stabilizer: 1 each 7” x 5½” piece of light weight, tear-away stabilizer

PREPARE POCKET

To make sure your pocket will be the right size make sure you have the Template made up. Template instructions can be found in General instructions.

Follow the Pocket Preparation instructions in the General instructions to prepare the pocket fabric for embroidery.

PREPARE SWIRL INSET FABRIC

See the General Instructions for Inset Fabric Preparation.

MAKE THE POCKET

Load the 7 Swirl design into your machine. 

Hoop a 6”x9” hoop with Badgemaster or similar clear wash-away stabilizer.

 Thread the machine with the thread color you plan to use for the decorative center flowers stitching. Use a thread color to compliment and/or contrast with the swirl fabric.

1.  Embroider the pocket placement line. 

Place the prepared pocket piece with the fold at the top and the pressed under edges at the bottom. The side and bottom edges should be matching the placement line exactly.

Tape the bottom and lower sides in place with masking tape or spray the back of the pocket with embroidery spray adhesive before placing, or do both.

2. Using the same color thread, embroider the pocket trim line.

Trim away fabric above the trim line using sharp, curved scissors to get as close to the stitching as possible, but being careful not to cut into the wash-away stabilizer in the hoop. Remove the hoop, if necessary, trim and

3.  Using the same color thread, embroider the Swirl fabric placement line.

 

Spray the back of the prepared Swirl fabric with spray adhesive and place it so the placement line is completely covered.

4. Using the same color thread, embroider Swirl fabric trim line.

Trim away fabric around the trim line using sharp, curved scissors to get as close to the stitching as possible, but being careful not to cut the wash-away stabilizer in the hoop or pocket fabric.

Remove the hoop, if necessary, trim and then return the hoop to the machine.

5. Using the same color thread, embroider the center decorative flowers.

 

6. Change the thread color to what you have chosen for the decorative center leaves and vine  and embroider.
7. Change the thread color to what you have chosen for the swirl satin cover stitching and embroider.

Pocket embroidery is finished.

Remove the tape from the pocket.

Lift the pocket out of the hoop, tearing away the clear stabilizer.

If desired, wash away stabilizer under running water. The stabilizer will wash away the first time the pocket is laundered. If you wash away the stabilizer, lay flat to dry or use a blow dryer to hasten drying and press pocket before attaching to your project.

Pocket is ready to attach to your project.
